5.0 out of five stars Big Daddy with big cache, March 23, 2010
By K. Heim “Klaus M. Heim” (Fountain Valley, CA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () I was cynical at 1st.

But I bought two, and put in a RAID1 mirror config, in a 8 drive raid box with two x multilane infiniband interfaces and a RocketRaid card.

The 64MB cache is obvious, totally. It isn’t hype. On average, I get 100MB/sec copying across a gigabit network in the LAN from one machine to this RAID volume. In a alike test (using the same source machine, to a volume of 750GB AAKS’, I get 82MB/sec across the wire. Again, the cache is obvious in my tests.

I am amazed at the quality of this drive.

I recommend these drives to anybody who needs to use a RAID config, and needs capacity, and dependability.

I only use WD, period.

I now own 46 hard drives, all WD.

The only WD hard drive I ever had fail, was a green 750GB one.

The older AAKS series was phenomenal, and they are the new ones to get!

(I have had drives fail a great deal using other manufacturers)

5.0 out of five stars And, there was much happiness., March 8, 2011
By Matthew Marlowe (San Diego, CA USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Western Digital two TB RE4 SATA three Gb/s 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive WD2003FYYS (Personal Computers) I am not usually a fan of SATA drives, I have worked greatly with SAS/SCSI drives for servers/etc for the last 20 years and only used ATA/SATA when obliged.
Still, I have had many projects come up newly where the only choice was SATA and high capacity was obliged.

After many bad experiences with the WDC Cavier Black 2TB, I gave the RE4 a attempt. It is been great. I have now had five of them running for the last six months and the SMART monitoring reports still show the drives as in nearly new condition. No errors, no need for sector changes, no strange increases of load cycle counts, etc. Performance also has been good..surprisingly good for a mere 7200rpm device. Not to talk about, the drives seem to work nicely in both software and hardware raid. I will most likely end up purchasing another five of them soon.

I’ll be happy if I can keep the failure rate to under 4/yr..this historically is a good rate for SATA/ATA.

I’m not sure what to think about WDC…I usually favor seagate, but the RE4 drives surely looks to be able to back up its assert as an enterprise SATA drive.

5.0 out of five stars hard Performer at a just Price, January 29, 2011
By P. Levine (San Francisco) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Western Digital 500 GB RE4 SATA three Gb/s 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive WD5003ABYX (Personal Computers) I bought this to replace a Seagate backup drive that lacked enough room for drive pictures. The WD5003 is calm and speedy and comes with a 5 year Enterprise warranty. No problems with it at all.

Buyers have been complaining about Amazon’s poor bare drive packaging in many of the reviews I have read. But, this drive has been packaged properly in a box of own made by WD, with plastic end caps suspending the drive over the bottom of the box. This package was put in another box with the rest of the things I ordered and a couple of air pillows. Possibly listened to the founded complaints and modified their bare drive shipping therefore. Then again, it may only apply to this specific hard drive.

5.0 out of five stars For certain use scenarios, it is an unbeatable cost/gig percentage, August 9, 2010
By Steve S. (Chicago, IL USA) See all my reviews This review is from: Seagate Momentus XT 250 GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32 MB Cache 2.5 Inch hard State Hybrid Drive ST92505610AS Bare Drive (Personal Computers) I have the 500GB variant of this drive. I also use and used SSD’s with SLC and MLC flash, JMicron controllers, Samsung Controllers, Barefoot controllers, and SandForce controllers on 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems. I have used some number of generations of Raptors, and 3Ware RAID controllers. I am not saying that to brag, I am saying it to point out I have a reasonable base for comparison and expectation.

Here’s what the drive does well: it is alignment and OS agnostic, so it doesn’t care if you run it unaligned on older XP systems. It’ll, over about five cycles, learn what you do and optimize it. You’ll notice your system boots much faster. It excels on systems where you boot into your OS and do the same basic tasks, open MS office and Firefox and viewpoint.

Here’s what the drive doesn’t do well: If you’re constantly changing what you run on your computer, your drive will constantly be “learning” what you do. I have also found it doesn’t do well with remote desktop apps that are constantly caching image data.

Here’s what the drive does that makes it no better or worse than any other mechanical drive: If you’re using the drive to store music or videos or such, they’re going to go the the platters. Then it is just another good, high performance 7200RPM notebook drive. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Here’s the KILLER APP reason to purchase this drive: I took a 32 bit Vista Home Premium laptop that was so congested and clogged with programs, leftovers of removed programs, fragmentation, you name it, and just cloned it to this drive. The mechanical drive it was on took literally five minutes to get to a useful state on the desktop. This drive, after about five boots, learned that our family needed Vista OS, Chrome for Farmville, and iTunes. We now have 30 second boots and though the drive is still loading services and such, we can launch apps now at the desktop. Our main apps either snap open, or in the case of iTunes launch about 3x faster. It is not subtle, it is big.

If you want a drive that doesn’t have alignment issues with older OS’s, and can be used mainly on a computer that does about the same kinds of things over and over, this drive will make a big difference for you. And since it is SLC cache, it is enterprise class lasting in that regard. As well, it mirrors its flash to the mechanical drive, if the flash fails, it just becomes a regular mechanical drive, sort of like a run flat tire.

4.0 out of five stars Cost/Performance agreement vs SSD; Speed Tests, August 19, 2010
By J. Cullen “researcher” (Boston, MA) See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME) This review is from: Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch hard State Hybrid Drive ST95005620AS (Personal Computers) I replaced my 500GB 5400rpm WD with this Momentus XT after doing exhausting research. I use my MacBoook Pro laptop for analytical work involving big datsets. Here is why I settled on the Momentus XT vs an SSD.

Momentus XT
4GB SLC SSD integrated into the hard drive for speedy access usually used files
Though not as fast as an SSD, but soooo much cheaper than 300GB+ of SSD space.
More vibration and a bit more sound than my WD 500GB, but not considerably so.
Mac OS X does not support TRIM. I was worried that a SSD drive could slow down considerably overtime without it.
Toms Hardware greatly suggested it over other 7200 rpm laptop hard drives. See their review for all the techy details.

Note that the integrated SSD can be used only for reading, not for writing. It generally clones your usually used files on the 4GB SSD.

If you need a sweet spot between speed and space this is it. The Momentus has a 4GB SLC SSD integrated into the hard drive which lets for fast reads of usually used data. This translates into really fast application loading like an SSD. It uses a learning algorithm to choose what to store on the SSD so it takes many time to get to best performance.

Most people have many of data that’s accessed rarely on their hard drive. An SSD is overkill since there is not much advantage to to storing rarely accessed on a really fast drive. If you’re accessing nearly your data all the time (like in a server application) then maybe an SSD is for you. For the rest of us there’s the Momentus XT.

I am specific about the sound with my MacBook Pro. The stock 250GB Seagate hard drive my laptop shipped with was virtually undetectable. When I tried the WD 1TB 5400rpm and WD 500GB 5400rpm, I has been disappointed to find that they both made audible white sound like that of a small cpu fan. The Momentus 7200rpm makes somewhat more sound than the WD drives, but not considerably so. It does produce more vibrations than the 5400rpm drives which you may be able to feel if you put your hand on the laptop case, but I’m wanting to live with it for the performance gains. I subtracted one star for the less than best acoustics.

Here are many performance specifications from my MacBook Pro using fast Bench. Note that these times don’t reflect the benefit of the integrated SSD. There reflect only the performance of the hard drive part. The throughput is alike to the WD 1TB 5400rpm which I also reviewed, but the random reading/writing is a bit faster.

4.0 out of five stars Good performance increase for the money, June 28, 2010
By ooglek (Falls Church, VA USA) See all my reviews This review is from: Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch hard State Hybrid Drive ST95005620AS (Personal Computers) I have read many of reviews, many good, many bad. I think many people have the idea that the product will speed everything up all the time, and this sets bad expectations. What this drive will do is cache frequently used data, like core Operating System files used at boot and usually used applications, and store that data in its 4GB SSD like cache. If your drive already reads and writes pretty fast, about 75 100MBps (megaBytes not bits), other than boot up and application loading, you are not going to notice most of a difference.

I use Apple’s OS X Snow Leopard, and it certainly boots faster (1 minute 30 seconds previous to this disk, now 55 seconds from power on to prepared + all my startup apps running), and usually run applications also start up observably faster.

I upgraded from a bit slower drive, so I see many performance get there, but nothing big.

Overall I got the disk read speeds I looked for faster boot, faster common app loading, and an in general increase in performance by upgrading from a slower drive completely.

This drive will not change your life, unless you’re booting some number of times a day or loading the same data frequently. It is a good drive with the benefit of faster boot and common app loading times, nothing more.

5.0 out of five stars Great drive packaging AOK, March 7, 2010
By pluto1999 “pluto1999″ (New York, NY USA) See all my reviews () This review is from: Western Digital Caviar Black one TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache interior Desktop Hard Drive Bulk/OEM WD1002FAEX (Personal Computers) First, this is a state of the art, newly presented drive from WDC. I believe it’s the best general use drive you may be able to get at this price point.

Prior to my buy, I read some number of negative reviews from previous customers who voiced dissatisfaction with Amazon’s packaging of OEM drives. Any chance of damage in shipping could indeed be reason to shop elsewhere for such a sensitive item, but on one such page of ranting and frustration I saw a note from that they had newly addressed these concerns, so I proceeded to order the drive.

Here’s the new and I hope last word on this issue: Problem solved. The drive arrives sealed in an anti static bag, secured by two end mounted shock absorbing plastic caddies, then double boxed with the common sealed air padding. The redundant packing system appears to be designed and the drive was working like a champ.

So purchase with confidence and kudos to for reacting to buyer reviews and making sure proper, safe packaging for this product.

4.0 out of five stars Fast but coffee pot loud!, July 15, 2010
By A. D. Minton (Hampton VA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Western Digital Caviar Black one TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache interior Desktop Hard Drive Bulk/OEM WD1002FAEX (Personal Computers) I have been using Western Digital hard drives since to get into computers in 1998. In fact I have never owned anything but WD hard drives (from 4.3gig to 1TB). In all my years of using them I have only had two go bad, though they never “completely” failed. This speaks of Western Digital’s consistency in dependability.

With that said I love the Caviar Blacks and have three of them in my system 500, 750, and now the new 1TB SATA three (64Meg cache).

While there’s a obvious speed get over my last 1TB Caviar Black (32Meg), the last variant was/is very quiet! This new SATA three drive is LOUD! It sounds like a percolating coffee pot at its highest boiling point, particularly throughout boot up or accessing files. Annoying, particularly if it is the noisiest part of your system!

I just put an i7 system in a Cooler Master HAF X case which has four fans one Front bottom 230mm 700RPM 19dBA (Red LED), one Top 200mm 7000RPM 19dBA, one Rear 140mm 1200RPM 19dBA. My Noctua CPU cooler fan tops out at 1200RPM load at 19dBA also. At idle my ATI 4890 video card fan runs around 27 , making it in audible above the other fans.

My point.. My case is very calm.. Save for WD’s new Caviar Black SATA three HD!!! Because of this I am seriously considering going back to my last 1TB 32meg cache Caviar Black HD.

BTW this is a substitute drive as I thought the 1st drive was flawed caused by the same sound. With that I called Western Digital about this issue.. and to make a long story short, they say this is normal and that drive was not intended with sound in mind, that if you want a “quieter” drive, get the Caviar Blue.

Make of that what you’ll..

All I know is that the older 32mge cache Caviar Black drives ARE quieter than their 64meg cache cousins.

Those looking for quieter WD drives may think about looking elsewhere (Blue or Green series) if sound is a factor over speed.

4 stars.

Edit. Went back to my last drive due to sound. If you want a caviar black that is calm, go with the 1FALS (32meg) vs the 2FAEX (64meg)
