(REAL NAME) This review is from: Barracuda 7200RPM three TB SATA six GB/s NCQ 64 MB Cache 3.5 Inch interior Bare Drive ST3000DM001 (Personal Computers) This is one of the choose not many 3TB drives accepted by Synology for use in a range of their NAS devices, so I put four of these in a DS411 in SHR with one disk redundancy (basically RAID 5). While anybody will tell you enterprise hard drives are better in RAID five or six configurations and they’re right, for the most part it is hard to deny the big price difference in going enterprise: 3TB enterprise drives are well over $550 now caused by the recent Thailand flood and it can be many time before that price drops considerably. While these drives were not as cheap as the 3TB WD Caviar Green varieties, I’ll NEVER put Caviar Greens in a RAID five again, so the ST3000DM001 quickly rose to the top of my admittedly short list.

I think it is vital to point out that IntelliPower (WD) and CoolSpin (Hitachi) technologies aren’t really ideal for any kind of RAID array using parity. WD Caviar Green drives, particularly, are recognized to on occasion not power up when needed, finally ensuing in them to get dropped from the RAID array. A good NAS like the DS411 will put the drives into hibernation after ten minutes of no activity, so you do not really need the benefit of “eco friendly” drives in this kind of RAID anyways. Plus, with 7200RPM you’ll get speed enhancements, so it is a no brainer to pick a drive like this over those.

That said, of course these don’t have TLER, RAFF and other benefits of enterprise class drives. So you run the risk of more errors, RAID rebuilds and possible failures by picking a buyer drive like this. But though the risk is greater, it is not really worth the extra money to go to 3TB enterprise class, so I feel this is a good agreement of risk and value.

You have to do this before formatting drives. . Also if this is a second storage HDD you will most probably have to buy a SATA power cable. Have generally had excellent results with seagate drives!

Buyer review from the Vine™ Program () My MOBO is about two years old and doesn’t natively support SATA III, so I bought a SATA III card to support the newer drives. The older MOBO doesn’t have the throughput of a newer one with faster bus, etc. If you have an older PC and want to add many speed, read on!

I ran Crystal Disk Mark 3.01 for these tests, and compared my hard state drive, this drive and a SATA II attached to the on board controller.

Sequential read:
ST2000DM001: 200.6
SSD 172.9 MB/s
SATA II drive: 83.77

Sequential write:
ST2000DM001: 158.7
SSD 99.78 MB/s
SATA II drive: 81.82

This is a blazingly fast drive. Because I am on an older system I can not use it to it is full possible but it does really increase performance on my older system it is a great alternative to a SSD! Add a SATA III card to your computer and this drive, and you will considerably speed up read and write speeds.

If you are using a computer with native SATA III support, you are tests will be better!

Installation was a snap Windows seven disk manager detected and formatted in no time. The SSD I compared it to is a Crucial 64 GB m4 2.5 Inch hard State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT064M4SSD2

This drive is great! Popped it into my esata dock, turned it on, and windows disk management saw it instantly, as the full 2.7tb. Initialized it, ensuring to pick GPT, , then formatted it. Windows saw the whole partition, no fuss.

To test the drive, I did a low level format, then a disk check. When both came back good, I copied as many files as I could fit on the drive, , then did another disk check. Came back good again, so I ran DiskMark to see what speeds I was to get. When the drive was nearly full (3gb free), I averaged around 30 40MBps. After I reformatted and ran the test again, I averaged 60MBps. Compare this to a smaller hard drive and you’ll see that this is considerably slower. (I just ran DiskMark on a full WD 500GB drive that is about five years old, and it averaged 80MBps)

However, 30MBps is lots of speed to stream movies, which is what I am using it for. This drive will not make the best boot drive, but it makes a great archival one.

As I have only owned it for about a week now, I can not comment on lasting dependability, but I’ll update if anything happens.
For now, I do recommend this drive.

After owning this drive for a couple of months now without any failures, it’s a nice choice. But, your mileage may differ, since mine looks to be a bit slower than a friend’s who bought the same variant (I was to get around 60 80MB/s while the drive was pretty full when I copyed files to his). All in all it is a good drive.

Here’s a little background on my WD drive experience, to offer perspective for the review. For my specific handling and review of this particular product, hop more down.

My last experience with other WD drives have been anywhere between 100 and 500gb drives, usually the WD Caviar Black or Caviar Blue series which are stout (Black being preferred). To date I still use a 250gb Black model which is nearly ten years old and was in severe conditions, ranging from 0 130 Fahrenheit sustained ambient temperatures, and was submitted to many shocks and shaking around while in use. Needless to it is a proven performer and a hard platform.

Enter the Green drive era.

The WD Green drives boast lower operating temperatures and of being quieter, which they accomplish by on the fly modification of the RPM of the spindles, which uses less power and produces less heat or sound in the procedure. Generally these perform no faster than 5400rpm (some suggested 5900), rather than 7200rpm, and they’ll cycle off or go into a low power state at different times.

Some may wonder why such a big drive with “environmental” features, may be so inexpensive in comparison to the Blue or Black series drives of the same (or less) size. Just it boils down to dependability. Do your research on the WD Green drives on many of tech sites and you will find that the 1st generation units had lots of issues because of their “green” features. As an example, my experience below

This is my fourth WD Green drive of big capacity, the last three being 1TB units and 1st generation. Two of the last three are dead, I may add. These three last drives were bought back in 2010. The 1st one to die, did so inside about a week of use.

It started having issues with it not wanting to come out of its powered down mode, and shortly thereafter I started hearing the lethal “click.. click.” sound, showing a head crash. The drive was unusable, and I afterward verified that the heads did in fact have a physical failure. I took the drive separately and found that when going into a low power cycle the heads parked themselves too harshly or somehow went too far past the head park zone, so some number of of them got caught on the plastic locking lane. Once the arm tried landing on the platters, it ripped some number of of the heads off and scratched the platters.

The other drive, it is substitute and same exact model, died inside about a month. Not a head crash, but haved intermittent spindle issues with not wanting to properly turn.

The 3rd drive I have had since, and have not had any big issues with it, but on a couple of instances in the past year it has randomly powered down of own accord (hard power down), and I lost many data.

HDD RPM SPEED 5400 or 7200:

If you are wondering which is better: 5400 or 7200, here is a little tidbit of info: The 5400 models turn slower, have a higher latency (seeking around the drive), but move more data in general. The 7200 models turn faster, have lower latency (can bounce around the drive faster), but supply less data per move.

What that means is, if you need a drive as your main “program” drive, which will be doing recurrent drive access and bouncing all over the place, doing work with many smaller files, then you will want a drive with lower latency like the 7200. On the other hand, if you just need a big storage drive for storing many big files, as an example movies or another big files, then a 5400 drive could be perfect.

Look at it this way, say you have many of small piles of leaves in your yard, and you need them bagged. If your bagger was a 7200, it may go from one pile to the next much faster than a 5400 could, but its performance benefits will be best with smaller piles. A 5400 could work best with fewer much bigger piles.

SPEED SUGGESTION:

If you are worried about in general speed and want this drive, once you have the most of your files in place, run a good defrag tool every now , then to help keep all the files in sequence. This prevents the drive from having to bounce around so much. As well, WD gives a file alignment tool which you may be able to use. They propose using it once you have everything setup the way you want it. The link for this tool is on their web site, and on the label of the drive.

MY handling OF THIS DRIVE:

The WD20EARX has so far, (a week into things), been good to me. If you are inquisitive about model designations, here is a couple of examples to assist you while you search for your drive:

EARX The SATA 6gb/sec (600MB/sec) interface (backwards matched with slower SATA slots)
EARS The SATA 1.5gb/sec (150MB/sec) interface

I’m using this as both a boot drive and a data drive, something I do not typically do but for my use I want only one drive in the system. It is going to store about 1.5tb of data, usually in only some files which are usually 8 10gb in size each. Latency was not a concern for me, so the slower Green drive did not annoy me. Boot times and program loading has really been amazingly fast, faster than my other Green drive.

System: Shuttle XPC
Motherboard: SN95G5 2.6ghz Athlon64 2gb ddr2 ram
Interface: SATA 1.5gb (150MB/sec)
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3
Boot Speed: 10 seconds (Once POST ends till I have a working desktop)

From the time the bootloader engages till the time I am at a working desktop, it is about ten seconds. Shockingly good performance for a green drive. Your experience may differ.

PROS:

Big capacity, low price thanks to Prime

Western Digital has a good repute and warranty

This newer generation green drive looks to be much better than the last, as well as a redesigned PCB and power traces

Full backwards compatibility with older SATA interfaces

Will include a jumper spot in case you have to manually set SATA speed or go into technicians mode

Lower power intake, temperatures and sound signature, if that matters to you

CONS:

Still worried about how the last not many Green drives went

OTHER THOUGHTS:

My experience makes me uneasy with the Green drive motion, but I am hoping they have worked out the kinks in this new redesign and will post any updates..

Be aware that Windows XP won’t be able to use a single partition bigger than 2tb. Windows Vista or seven will handle bigger than 2tb at a time

They are slower at RPM speed than many other drives, at 5400 RPM if you’re someone who “needs” a 7200 RPM drive then you don’t need this.

They are but the CHEAPEST, MOST dependable CHEAP drive out there. Unlike many brands who will sell you a 5400rpm drive for this, or the different drawbacks from externals, this drive is inexpensive, not annoying in its “green” power management (or needing to have it shut off) and its fast, I get good speed in my 6gb/sec Sata3 port, and in general think its great that for this price, I get a drive with a three year warranty, reasonably fast move rates in spite of a lower RPM (RPM isn’t everything apparently) and its a Western Digital (and not lower on quality) for the price.

Western Digital have been dependable drives for me, for many years. I have many going back as far as eight years old and still running (that doesn’t mean one never died) but it is not common. It is more common that the storage size becomes too small for me and gets it shelved than the drive fails.

I am optimistic by the early performance of these Caviar Greens that I’ll continue to use these for a 3tb drive. For 2tb drives I favor the Caviar Black (which isn’t made in 3tb size). I was apprehensive to go to another brand, so chose WD’s lower line rather than risk a brand who hasn’t performed well for me for many years.

Five stars are for the value, and the fact it delivers. I could like to see a 7200rpm 3tb from WD someday come around, like a Caviar Black 3tb, but till they do, I’m happy to purchase these, in spite of I typically purchase the Blacks (I do need bigger than 2tb occasionally) or like for my raid array which runs six 3tb caviar greens, wanted the array to be bigger then six 2tb blacks could accomplish.

Buy this drive with a clean conscience, it’ll work for you, and work well. I never have had a DOA from WD, I’m sure it happens, but I have six pcs, and for that to never happened, is great.

WD! Caviar! and this time GREEN ain’t that bad.
In fact for its price, you can not beat it.

Do not worry about loosing your downloaded content because you may be able to redownload it free of charge (you already paid for it). Just look in your PSN account(“download history”).It took me about 15 min. To copy my game save data to 16 gig usb flash drive, exchange hard drives, then reinstall them. If you purchase a 2.5 inch sata hard drive case you may be able to use your old one for a movable external storage device.

I benchmarked this inside five minutes of receiving it.
I ordered this with an external case, Sabrent 2.5 Inch SATA Hard Drive USB 2.0/ E SATA Aluminium Enclosure (EC 25HSU) and eSATA cable Serial ATA 2.0 Cable, eSATA 300Mbps, 0.5 Meter (1.6 ft).
The case comes with a USB >Power input cable for use as eSATA device, but not an real eSATA cable. If you will be using this as an external USB drive, you will not need the extra cable.
I could recommend running as eSATA because it is up to three times faster for sequential reads/writes in that mode, so for big files, videos, and creating backups it’ll really hum along.

One has been listed as the stand alone, the other has been listed in the Western Digital Scorpio Blue page with the pull down menu that has all the different sized drives in the series. I dont have idea what the difference is. Amazon, for many reason, took down the 500 GB listing from the pull down menu and it now has it is own page. Odd they chose that direction. It could have made more sense to take off the individual listing.

Ok, this is for PS3 owners/upgraders. This drive fits the PS3 wonderfully and runs nice and cool with no issues. For the price you can not go wrong. I have the 40 GB PS3 (Spider Man three bundle) and have the data (saves + install) of about ten games and I runned out of space. I did many of research of the different SATA 2.5″ laptop hard drives available. I researched all the different brands and compared reviews and prices vs size. I came to the conclusion that a 500 GB drive for $100 is a steal given the extra space gained, so that is the direction I went. Of all the brands, the Western Digital Scorpio Blue series seemed to have the most positive reviews all over with the least total of reviews stating drive failure, so that is the one I chose.

Installing was very easy after backing up my data. The longest part of the whole procedure backed up and restoring the data. I will not go into details, but I do recommend the app another reviewer used to format an external drive bigger than 32GB in the FAT32 file system. It is called “fat32format”. It works very well and very fast (less than four seconds for a 120GB external drive). Just follow the directions and you are good. I did this because in order for the PS3 to recognize the external drive it must be formatted in the FAT32 file system. As for the procedure of upgrading the PS3, just google “upgrade PS3 hard drive” and you will get tons of tutorials and videos.

Now here is something important: many of people who upgraded their PS3′s and saw xxx/465 GB free after upgrading aren’t realizing that this isn’t the fault of the PS3. You could put the same drive in a laptop and it’ll have the same 465GB. This is because manufacturers promote a gigabyte as something different than what windows or the PS3 recognize. Manufacturers see a gigabyte (GB) as 1000 megabytes, and one megabyte (MB) as 1000 kilobytes (KB), when in actuality windows sees one MB as 1024 KB. So that is where the unaccounted lost space goes.

So as of now, my opinion is that this hard drive is a great choice for PS3 upgrades. If you do not want to drop a bill on the 500GB variant they have the Scorpio Blues in smaller sizes for reduced prices. I like this hard drive so much I may replace my laptop hard drive with one.

While on the market for an upgrade hard drive, I came across the WD 500GB Scorpio Blue and hesitant at 1st (I couldn’t find anywhere a post which could ensure that it could work with my MB), I decided to go for it. Upon receiving my hard drive, I ran the Time Machine on my MB, switched the OEM hard drive for this beauty (it took about 15 mins.), installed Leopard from the DVD that came with my MB, , then restored from the last TM backup (installing the OS took about ten mins, and restoring the backup took about two hrs it was a 140GB backup!). So far, I have had no problems whatsoever using the drive. It’s calm, doesn’t heat up excesively (comparable really to the original hard drive), and now I have a MB with a 500GB drive!!!

I am very pleased with this drive, and could certainly recomend it to any MB/MBPro owner who wants to upgrade the hard drive.

Update: July 19th, 2010

I’ve been using this hard drive for over a year and a half now, without any problems whatsoever. Quite drive, no difference in power intake, performs great! really, I’m thinking about replacing it with the new 1TB Scorpio, particularly because my digital movie collection is growing really fast (I’m ripping my own DVD’s so I can view them in my LCD TV, my iPhone, my iPod or my MBP). Great drives, and to be honest, I have never heard of any freezing, beach balls, or any other problems before or after I bought my drive. Great product.Still give it five stars!

MINUSES: You can be able to find bigger drives but not everyone may need more.

Of course, it is not ‘the biggest’ but I knew that a couple of months ago, when I upgraded my PS3. I also figured that, since I dont have plans of storing a movie library, 320 GB could carry me for the next several years. After that, it is probably that I’d be purchasing the next generation game/multimedia machine.

Advice to the PS3 upgraders from someone who, after many hesitation, really did it:
Go for the highest capacity. If it is a 2.5″ SATA and you may be able to pay for it you may want to most likely go with it. I already replaced my original PS3 drive with a 320GB but my previously 60GB laptop has a 500GB 2.5″ WD SATA now.
If you have to format this drive or any drive to Fat32, the best utility I found was FAT32FORMAT.EXE Google and you shall find it out there. I am not reviewing the formatter utility but I can tell you that it does a drive in less than ten seconds AND it works on Vista.
It assists to have a 60 80 USB connected drive useful to backup your PS3 content before upgrading. With one of these as the backup device, the PS3 completely restore EVERYTHING, as well as whatever copywrited or protected objects, like, in my case the PS2 memory cards emulations.

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, eight MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA II WD5000BEVT looks to be the way to go these days. I like WD and the 500GB is selling now for less than I paid for the 320GB. I really helped a couple of friends upgrade with this drive and it was fast and easy.

Note 2: (April 8, 2009)
The review above was for the 320GB, which I used to upgrade my PS3. I just ordered the 500GB because life became nearly unbearable with a 60GB on my laptop. I’m planning to exchange the drives without really reinstalling the OS and the apps with help from Acronis True Image Home 2009 PC Backup & recuperation.

Note 3: (April 12, 2009) Laptop Upgrade
My two year old Thinkpad T60 came with a wimpy 60GB SATA drive. I needed the capability to upgrade to the much bigger 500GB and do it without having to reinstall the OS, apply the service packs , then reinstall and configure 100 different little apps.

Acronis True Image Home 2009 PC Backup & recuperation allowed me to do all of the above in about one hour. Its Utilities section has a ‘clone’ choice that could copy EVERYTHING, as well as the Master Boot Record/Sector (MBR) from the puny 60GB drive unto the 500GB while allowing me to control the size of the active partition this while the 500GB has been connected through a USB wire and the laptop booted off the program’s CD.

Once the operation finished (50 minutes) I simply removed the old 60GB drive off my laptop and replaced it with the 500GB drive. Once the laptop has been turned back on it booted up happily, with a 200GB master partition and a 300GB second partition. There are three words that I have to use to describe the process: PERFECTION and COMPLETE SATISFACTION. This capability alone is worth the price of this product.

To my surprise, with the new drive, the main Hard Disk score as computed by Microsoft (right click on ‘My computer’ then choose ‘Properties’) jumped from a decent 4.8 to an unexpected 5.7.

I really wanted 1TB, but 750GB will do for now. I have it in a MBP 15″ with a second 1TB hard drive in my optical bay.

Seagate had many problems with their 500GB hybrids, but seemed to get the issues worked out with new firmware (I never had a problem with mine). I have not experienced any issues with the new 750GB either, but it’ll take time before I can comment on the dependability lasting. I check my drives weekly for data corruption, and so far have found none, nor has there been stalling or another issues.

By PB (Escondido, California, US) See all my reviews () This review is from: Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 32 MB Cache 2.5 Inch hard State Hybrid Drive ST750LX003 (Personal Computers) bought this newly for a early 2011 MBP 17″ 2.2GHZ 16 GB ram, Lion & Snow Leopard & data partitions (3 in all in same order of creation) The drive replaces a Samsung 1TB 5400rpm drive which had replaced the stock Toshiba/Apple 750 GB 5400 rpm drive. Formatting & copying the last partitions on the Samsung to the new Seagate was done via SeriTek 6G expresscard while Seagate was still external. Installed after copying w/o event, booted good. Apple system profiler show the Seagate drive connecting at the 6G speed no issue’s, not like the well stated 6G SSD connection trouble with early 2011 17″ & many 15″ MacBook Pro’s. My 17″ BTW was fitted April 2011 & reports 6G in HD bay also as in optical bay.

The new Seagate is calm while copying outside the MBP. Not much information on outside of its case other than Seagate name/size of drive, make date 11/2011, part/model/serial numbers, firmware SM12 and rated @5V .70 amps. And made in CHINA (Amperage draw is lower than the Samsung one TB which is .85 amps & Toshiba/Apple 750 GB rated at 1.0 Amps. Both of which are only 5400 rpm drives)Does not state speed, flash memory, or cache size, or SATA interface speed which are 7200rpm, 8GB flash memory, 32MB cache & SATA III or otherwise called 6G. Seagate did a pretty great job with current draw on drive in comparison to other laptop drives inc. Samsung & Toshiba/Apple stock drive.

I do not know how they’re cramming all this stuff into a 2.5″ form factor but the Seagate weighs more than any of the 2.5″ drives that I have here. The Seagate comes in at three 7/8 oz. Somewhat heavier than the other 2.5″ drives(I have). They weigh from three 3/8 three 1/2 oz

The earlier installed 1TB 5400rpm only 8MB cache Samsung was somewhat faster speed wise by the numbers in general than the stock Toshiba/Apple 750 GB 5400rpm drive it replaced. The Samsung has been replaced early on throughout its 1st 30 days for pending failing sectors back in July. Many people haved trouble with that drive(Samsung 1TB 2.5″) firstly. The substitute Samsung was good since. I bought it(the Samsung 1TB 2 platter) for the extra size but really waited for at least a 750GB, 7200rpm w/larger cache & of course 6G since the MBP early 2011 supported SATA III in the chipset. Seagate does it.

The new Seagate is in fact faster. Depending on a range of different tests & concurrent handling with three partitions on it performance wise it comes out around 15 25 faster over the Samsung & Toshiba/Apple drives depending on the numbers. Boot time on my Lion 10.7.2 (which is a loaded system, 138GB used #1 of the three partitions on drive) went down from around 52 seconds from the sound of the chime to login screen to 30 seconds from chime to login. Aperture launches 180 GB (1st launch after boot, non referenced, stored inside Aperture library) inside some seconds. That to me is pretty remarkable, most likely half the time the Samsung required to do same. Time on battery feels better also. Sitting around on battery while surfing web doing nothing really intensive other than Firefox using 1GB graphic chip at times for who knows what, the time left over in menubar just kept going on & on certainly longer than the Samsung battery handling. It could seem that Seagate implemented many violent power management don’t know for sure, but feels like it.

For those interested in Raiding this drive, Storage Reviews has review comparing this drive with others inc SSD. So the Momentus XT does Raid zero well.

A 7200 rpm, 750 GB, 32 MB cache, 8GB flash memory using the SATA III 6GBS interface.
Flash memory integration/management non OS dependent looks to learn & improve performance
So far no Seagate bs firmware as with certain last drives (you know who you are right?)
Real & felt speed increase(to ME, but I wasn’t using a 7200rpm drive in the 17″MBP to compare so YMMV)
A bit of this(8 GB flash memory) & a bit of that(7200 rpm, 32MB cache, SATA III)
Most likely the fastest 2.5″ spinning drive on market 9.5 mm height fits all laptops.
Five year warranty
Appears to have according to Seagate specifications high shock capability if you go around dropping your laptop
Raid capable
Zero issues so far.
Made in China, no flooding ??
Price is in the right area NOW, only because of inflated disk established drives caused by flooding.

CON’s
Price at $239.00 is STEEP. I paid $89. For the Samsung. Prices are up, of course caused by Asian flooding.

Still not a one TB size with same features as this drive come on Seagate, Hitachi/Western need 1TB
Not a SSD @ spinning drive price. LOL

Conclusion :
If you aren’t prepared to use up lots of money on a big SSD given the still high price around $1.75 per GB. The Seagate is a really nice blend of features for a disk established laptop drive, performance & capacity @ around $.32 per GB. Still an ouch. Could favor a price around .16 per GB tops, but with the flooding issue in Thailand(not China though??) I guess that is the market. The drive isn’t a game changer still, still it is a nice & obvious incremental speed increase, also as price. It’ll be interesting to see if spinning drive manufacturers keep adding more flash to spinning drives & start seeing similar not equal, just alike to SSD performance & how that plays out price wise between the two formats. So far no issues with drive but only some days of use time will tell.

Highly suggested, so far except for the price but heh the economy is recovering right??? LOL

Applications just “pop up” on the screen. Well worth the investment, but I wonder how much cheaper it could have been if it was not for the floods in Thailand. I have had totally no problems with this drive. Seagate got it right this time. It’s much faster than their 500gb XT drive.

I am rather perplexed as to why this happened. But all in all this hard drive has no failed me still. Boot times are about 30 seconds from power on to windows aero completely loaded. I dont have complaints about this drive, except the drastic price change. Before I saw the price I thinked about purchasing another, but I guess that changed my mind.

Trying to ‘repair’ with the win7 disc didn’t work. This happened now with both drive i bought. Thankfully is good and i got new ones and they’re running good (so far)

No bad sectors stated with CHKDSK and the intel fast storage utility says everything is ok. Another dead and I am gonna get something else.

Those drives are running good, but, for the price, I had totally no reason not to upgrade them now.

I came across this drive center of last week and selled it new for $29 I scratched my head thinking “what’s the deal” and “what’s wrong with the drives”? Sure, though they were above $25, was still charging for the shipping so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down somewhat. The old 3Gb variant of this drive selled for over $40 so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever it was a great price.

The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past nine months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I am storing the old drives just in case these new ones have any issues I will not have to rebuild the system drives from scratch.

I know that the motherboards in my machines can not make use of the 6Gb throughput, but, these drives are certainly faster than what they are replacing older WD drives which point to they’re 7200RPM and 3Gb. Specifications on the older drives point to performance should not be all that different, but it’s, and for the better. I will not question it.

The drive indicates you may be able to jumper pins five and six to bound it to 3Gb, but I did not understand the benefit of doing it, so I left it unjumpered and it is working well.

To summarize these drives are fast, calm, and so far are performing excellently. I am happy with them far.

The drive has been received inside three or four days and has been packaged very well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long recognized about. Info from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a recognized problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow.

The WD10EALX drive is pretty deafening. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may give to the sound level. The sound looks to be from the head motion. The platter turn is silent. For the price this is one drive that’s hard to defeat and I’m well happy with it. My bios can not take benefit of the six Gb/s move rate but the drive is plenty fast just the same. I loaded around 600 gig of data onto it. After around three weeks I will assume it’ll not fail and put the case back together. If it fails I will update this review. I noticed on NewEgg that some failures beed stated. Not the long term ones but the more probably out of the box ones. Here is keeping my fingers crossed. (Boot drive failures are a pain).

UPDATE:
OK. I put the case back together. The drive isn’t silent but it’s pretty calm. I can hear just faint clicks as it does its thing. Nice. No problems with the drive at all. Suggested.

I replaced a 500GB WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS with this WD Caviar Blue WD10EALX as the main drive in an HP i7 desktop. This drive and the old WD drive show just same CrystalMark results, but it does seem to load programs and boot faster (I restored a picture of the old installation to the new disk, so everything else is the same). CrystalMark shows that it outperforms the Green series drives I own by 20 30.

I looked at the WD Caviar Black drives, and saw many reviews that said they’re deafening, so I went for this one, which is advertised as quieter and cooler than the Black series and insignificantly slower than a Black. I do not have a Black series to compare to, but the WD10EALX is certainly louder than the 500GB Blue variant, and also louder than 1TB and 2TB WD Green drives that I own. It is not deafening, but it’s louder than those other drives. It has the normal disk seek sound which isn’t annoying, but present in the same way the computer fan sound is present. If you’re going for the final in calm, then this is not it.

If you want to compare this to Seagate, then it’s a 300 star product. I used to be a Seagate buyer as their price/performance percentage seemed great. I got hosed by Seagate with a 1.5TB drive, the same one that everyone else got hosed on. They offered to recover my data for $900. I told them to stuff it and I only purchase WD and other brands now. My plan is to use this drive a year or so and replace with SSD, demoting this one to backup. I’d most likely attempt another brand at this price point if I had to purchase another 7200RPM 1TB drive, but I’m not disappointed in my buy, just underwhelmed by the performance. It’s advertised as being calm and fast, but it isn’t quieter nor faster than the disk it replaces, hence the comparatively low ranking and minor disappointment.

I wanted to replace two of the old drives with the ones.
I bought and installed and now noticed that on Power ON, it could take not many seconds for my Server to reach POST screen, which is surprising. I have 850W power supply, and two video cards, but still have lots of spare power capacity left.
So I disconnected these two new drives, and guess what, system now comes to POST on power up.
I did many research and found that this model drives draws more power on start up. Once started, they behave nicely, just the initial power ON current draw is higher than other drives. Long story short, I swapped the drives from my NAS enclosure to my server and installed these two drives in my NAS.

PROS:
1) whopping 64MB cache..!!!!
2) Fast SATA 6Gb/s interface
3) Sustained high data move rate, (recreating RAID was much faster on these drives)
4) Light weight since it has only three platters
5) Runs cool, with sustained data in/out operation
6) calm, when transferring, reading/writing data
7) Cheap

CONS:
1) Higher start up current draw
2) 4K sector size, which may or may not be a problem for you, based on your application, OS etc.
3) Only three year warranty

I have suggested Seagate for most of those years. I’m in the storage business and have many of direct experience with drives.

The problem I’m discovering is a largely reduced dependability in Seagate 1.5 and 2TB disks. I now have about a dozen 2TB Seagates in active use. Seven of them are beginning to fail, in under 4,000 hours of use. They are disks which were burned in by certifying them for about three days with an intensive read/write pattern, to eliminate early failure disks. In the general disk population, I have also seen a high failure rate. This is unacceptable.

Google performed a study using over 100,000 disks some years back. Google found statistical differences in failure rates between manufacturers, that they didn’t publish. They also noted that “enterprise” drives didn’t result in longer lifespans. They found NO correlation between heavy responsibility or light responsibility use in failure. What Google did report was that a few of SMART parameters may be used to predict drives that could soon fail. Among they are reallocated sectors. Once a drive begins reallocating, they usually fail inside six months or less. There are SMART utilities which are starting to implement this knowledge and alerting users to predicted failures.

For a long time, Seagate was the premium brand of hard drives, with Hitachi. They may still be. But, this failure rate on the 1.5 and 2TB drives, also to the big firmware flaw on the 1.5TB drives (Many customers lost data on the 1.5TB drives, where drives failed from a firmware flaw), makes me cautious on Seagate now.

I am recommending Hitachi for now, they’ll cost a bit more, but till more data is in, be alert if Seagates are installed and possibly avoid them in servers and mission important installations. I dont have data still on the 3TB drives.

While I can not attest to the new SATA three (6 gb/sec) speeds (the ReadyNAS is SATA 2), the new firmware from Netgear obliged me to do a factory reset on the device, and upon boot it recognized the new 4k format being used by this drive. After the drives were striped and the volume redundant, I was able to copy about a terabyte of data off my local machine in about twelve hours (with breaks in between).

The new drives run cooler than the old 500′s, are surprisingly calm, and fast so far I am quite impressed with their performance (especially with the 64mb cache). While I have not seen their long term viability still, I am pleasantly surprised by how well they work.

This drive is great! Popped it into my esata dock, turned it on, and windows disk management saw it instantly, as the full 2.7tb. Initialized it, ensuring to pick GPT, , then formatted it. Windows saw the whole partition, no fuss.

To test the drive, I did a low level format, then a disk check. When both came back good, I copied as many files as I could fit on the drive, , then did another disk check. Came back good again, so I ran DiskMark to see what speeds I was to get. When the drive was nearly full (3gb free), I averaged around 30 40MBps. After I reformatted and ran the test again, I averaged 60MBps. Compare this to a smaller hard drive and you’ll see that this is considerably slower. (I just ran DiskMark on a full WD 500GB drive that is about five years old, and it averaged 80MBps)

However, 30MBps is lots of speed to stream movies, which is what I am using it for. This drive will not make the best boot drive, but it makes a great archival one.

As I have only owned it for about a week now, I can not comment on lasting dependability, but I’ll update if anything happens.
For now, I do recommend this drive.

After owning this drive for a couple of months now without any failures, it’s a nice choice. But, your mileage may differ, since mine looks to be a bit slower than a friend’s who bought the same variant (I was to get around 60 80MB/s while the drive was pretty full when I copyed files to his). All in all it is a good drive.

Here’s a little background on my WD drive experience, to offer perspective for the review. For my specific handling and review of this particular product, hop more down.

My last experience with other WD drives have been anywhere between 100 and 500gb drives, usually the WD Caviar Black or Caviar Blue series which are stout (Black being preferred). To date I still use a 250gb Black model which is nearly ten years old and was in severe conditions, ranging from 0 130 Fahrenheit sustained ambient temperatures, and was submitted to many shocks and shaking around while in use. Needless to it is a proven performer and a hard platform.

Enter the Green drive era.

The WD Green drives boast lower operating temperatures and of being quieter, which they accomplish by on the fly modification of the RPM of the spindles, which uses less power and produces less heat or sound in the procedure. Generally these perform no faster than 5400rpm (some suggested 5900), rather than 7200rpm, and they’ll cycle off or go into a low power state at different times.

Some may wonder why such a big drive with “environmental” features, may be so inexpensive in comparison to the Blue or Black series drives of the same (or less) size. Just it boils down to dependability. Do your research on the WD Green drives on many of tech sites and you will find that the 1st generation units had lots of issues because of their “green” features. As an example, my experience below

This is my fourth WD Green drive of big capacity, the last three being 1TB units and 1st generation. Two of the last three are dead, I may add. These three last drives were bought back in 2010. The 1st one to die, did so inside about a week of use.

It started having issues with it not wanting to come out of its powered down mode, and shortly thereafter I started hearing the lethal “click.. click.” sound, showing a head crash. The drive was unusable, and I afterward verified that the heads did in fact have a physical failure. I took the drive separately and found that when going into a low power cycle the heads parked themselves too harshly or somehow went too far past the head park zone, so some number of of them got caught on the plastic locking lane. Once the arm tried landing on the platters, it ripped some number of of the heads off and scratched the platters.

The other drive, it is substitute and same exact model, died inside about a month. Not a head crash, but haved intermittent spindle issues with not wanting to properly turn.

The 3rd drive I have had since, and have not had any big issues with it, but on a couple of instances in the past year it has randomly powered down of own accord (hard power down), and I lost many data.

If you are wondering which is better: 5400 or 7200, here is a little tidbit of info: The 5400 models turn slower, have a higher latency (seeking around the drive), but move more data in general. The 7200 models turn faster, have lower latency (can bounce around the drive faster), but supply less data per move.

What that means is, if you need a drive as your main “program” drive, which will be doing recurrent drive access and bouncing all over the place, doing work with many smaller files, then you will want a drive with lower latency like the 7200. On the other hand, if you just need a big storage drive for storing many big files, as an example movies or another big files, then a 5400 drive could be perfect.

Look at it this way, say you have many of small piles of leaves in your yard, and you need them bagged. If your bagger was a 7200, it may go from one pile to the next much faster than a 5400 could, but its performance benefits will be best with smaller piles. A 5400 could work best with fewer much bigger piles.

SPEED SUGGESTION:

If you are worried about in general speed and want this drive, once you have the most of your files in place, run a good defrag tool every now , then to help keep all the files in sequence. This prevents the drive from having to bounce around so much. As well, WD gives a file alignment tool which you may be able to use. They propose using it once you have everything setup the way you want it. The link for this tool is on their web site, and on the label of the drive.

MY handling OF THIS DRIVE:

The WD20EARX has so far, (a week into things), been good to me. If you are inquisitive about model designations, here is a couple of examples to assist you while you search for your drive:

EARX The SATA 6gb/sec (600MB/sec) interface (backwards matched with slower SATA slots)
EARS The SATA 1.5gb/sec (150MB/sec) interface

I’m using this as both a boot drive and a data drive, something I do not typically do but for my use I want only one drive in the system. It is going to store about 1.5tb of data, usually in only some files which are usually 8 10gb in size each. Latency was not a concern for me, so the slower Green drive did not annoy me. Boot times and program loading has really been amazingly fast, faster than my other Green drive.

System: Shuttle XPC
Motherboard: SN95G5 2.6ghz Athlon64 2gb ddr2 ram
Interface: SATA 1.5gb (150MB/sec)
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3
Boot Speed: 10 seconds (Once POST ends till I have a working desktop)

From the time the bootloader engages till the time I am at a working desktop, it is about ten seconds. Shockingly good performance for a green drive. Your experience may differ.

PROS:

Big capacity, low price thanks to Prime

Western Digital has a good repute and warranty

This newer generation green drive looks to be much better than the last, as well as a redesigned PCB and power traces

Full backwards compatibility with older SATA interfaces

Will include a jumper spot in case you have to manually set SATA speed or go into technicians mode

Lower power intake, temperatures and sound signature, if that matters to you

CONS:

Still worried about how the last not many Green drives went

OTHER THOUGHTS:

My experience makes me uneasy with the Green drive motion, but I am hoping they have worked out the kinks in this new redesign and will post any updates..

Be aware that Windows XP won’t be able to use a single partition bigger than 2tb. Windows Vista or seven will handle bigger than 2tb at a time

They are slower at RPM speed than many other drives, at 5400 RPM if you’re someone who “needs” a 7200 RPM drive then you don’t need this.

They are but the CHEAPEST, MOST dependable CHEAP drive out there. Unlike many brands who will sell you a 5400rpm drive for this, or the different drawbacks from externals, this drive is inexpensive, not annoying in its “green” power management (or needing to have it shut off) and its fast, I get good speed in my 6gb/sec Sata3 port, and in general think its great that for this price, I get a drive with a three year warranty, reasonably fast move rates in spite of a lower RPM (RPM isn’t everything apparently) and its a Western Digital (and not lower on quality) for the price.

Western Digital have been dependable drives for me, for many years. I have many going back as far as eight years old and still running (that doesn’t mean one never died) but it is not common. It is more common that the storage size becomes too small for me and gets it shelved than the drive fails.

I am optimistic by the early performance of these Caviar Greens that I’ll continue to use these for a 3tb drive. For 2tb drives I favor the Caviar Black (which isn’t made in 3tb size). I was apprehensive to go to another brand, so chose WD’s lower line rather than risk a brand who hasn’t performed well for me for many years.

Five stars are for the value, and the fact it delivers. I could like to see a 7200rpm 3tb from WD someday come around, like a Caviar Black 3tb, but till they do, I’m happy to purchase these, in spite of I typically purchase the Blacks (I do need bigger than 2tb occasionally) or like for my raid array which runs six 3tb caviar greens, wanted the array to be bigger then six 2tb blacks could accomplish.

Buy this drive with a clean conscience, it’ll work for you, and work well. I never have had a DOA from WD, I’m sure it happens, but I have six pcs, and for that to never happened, is great.

WD! Caviar! and this time GREEN ain’t that bad.
In fact for its price, you can not beat it.

I wanted to replace two of the old drives with the ones.
I bought and installed and now noticed that on Power ON, it could take not many seconds for my Server to reach POST screen, which is surprising. I have 850W power supply, and two video cards, but still have lots of spare power capacity left.
So I disconnected these two new drives, and guess what, system now comes to POST on power up.
I did many research and found that this model drives draws more power on start up. Once started, they behave nicely, just the initial power ON current draw is higher than other drives. Long story short, I swapped the drives from my NAS enclosure to my server and installed these two drives in my NAS.

PROS:
1) whopping 64MB cache..!!!!
2) Fast SATA 6Gb/s interface
3) Sustained high data move rate, (recreating RAID was much faster on these drives)
4) Light weight since it has only three platters
5) Runs cool, with sustained data in/out operation
6) calm, when transferring, reading/writing data
7) Cheap

CONS:
1) Higher start up current draw
2) 4K sector size, which may or may not be a problem for you, based on your application, OS etc.
3) Only three year warranty

While I can not attest to the new SATA three (6 gb/sec) speeds (the ReadyNAS is SATA 2), the new firmware from Netgear obliged me to do a factory reset on the device, and upon boot it recognized the new 4k format being used by this drive. After the drives were striped and the volume redundant, I was able to copy about a terabyte of data off my local machine in about twelve hours (with breaks in between).

The new drives run cooler than the old 500′s, are surprisingly calm, and fast so far I am quite impressed with their performance (especially with the 64mb cache). While I have not seen their long term viability still, I am pleasantly surprised by how well they work.

I have suggested Seagate for most of those years. I’m in the storage business and have many of direct experience with drives.

The problem I’m discovering is a largely reduced dependability in Seagate 1.5 and 2TB disks. I now have about a dozen 2TB Seagates in active use. Seven of them are beginning to fail, in under 4,000 hours of use. They are disks which were burned in by certifying them for about three days with an intensive read/write pattern, to eliminate early failure disks. In the general disk population, I have also seen a high failure rate. This is unacceptable.

Google performed a study using over 100,000 disks some years back. Google found statistical differences in failure rates between manufacturers, that they didn’t publish. They also noted that “enterprise” drives didn’t result in longer lifespans. They found NO correlation between heavy responsibility or light responsibility use in failure. What Google did report was that a few of SMART parameters may be used to predict drives that could soon fail. Among they are reallocated sectors. Once a drive begins reallocating, they usually fail inside six months or less. There are SMART utilities which are starting to implement this knowledge and alerting users to predicted failures.

For a long time, Seagate was the premium brand of hard drives, with Hitachi. They may still be. But, this failure rate on the 1.5 and 2TB drives, also to the big firmware flaw on the 1.5TB drives (Many customers lost data on the 1.5TB drives, where drives failed from a firmware flaw), makes me cautious on Seagate now.

I am recommending Hitachi for now, they’ll cost a bit more, but till more data is in, be alert if Seagates are installed and possibly avoid them in servers and mission important installations. I dont have data still on the 3TB drives.
